Judges Critiques

Chris Quantrill

Dogs Judge

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chairman and Committee for inviting me to judge this wonderful breed, an opportunity I hardly had hopes ever to do. I thank all for their hospitality and friendship afforded me on this day. To all exhibitors who attended and allowed me to go over and handle their dogs “Thank you”. I also thank you all for your splendid sportsmanship no matter what placing you were given. Finally thank you to my Co Judge who agreed that my choice of Male went Best in Show, I think we were both graced with some magnificent examples of a very noble breed.

Minor Puppy Dog:- 5 ents 2 abs

1st Mrs & Mr S & J Thurlby’s :- “Justinian Lord Bradley” just turned 6 months this handsome young fawn dog has a great deal of maturing to do however everything that is desired in a grown Dane is certainly already there. Superb young correct shaped head, with correct shaped ears and excellent balance between head and muzzle, nice flat skull, clear well set eyes and lovely shape to muzzle no hanging flews, nice and blunt ended and sits atop a most graceful neck neither too long or too short, excellent dentition. Correct shaped neckline to well laid shoulder, nice straight well boned forelegs with good pasterns and nice tight feet. Good depth and width of chest and good spring of rib, excellent top line held very well on the move, strong hind quarters that helped drive this youngster in nice straight movement, correct placed tail that hung very nicely on the move. Certainly a dog with great potential if he continues as he has started.

2nd Mr D R Simpson’s :- Renescent Super Sic” 7 month old Harlequin with very nice correct marking, good head and body, nice reach of neck to good top line, chest wide but would prefer more depth, strong well boned forelegs and fair pasterns, good hind quarters but would like to see a little more angulation, well set tail moved well once set up.

3rd Ms L Wood’s :-“Castledayz Jagermeister”.

Puppy Dog :- 5 ents 1 abs 1 w/d

1st & BP Dog Mrs S J Bishton’s “Jaydania Bjorn Borg” 9 month old Fawn well living up to his name certainly a future Champion if he continues as he is going. Excellent balance of body and head with superb shape throughout along with excellent bone. This youngster stood out in his class and as he was also superbly schooled he showed himself in the best possible way. Classic shaped head which he held very regally without the need to be strung up. Super crest of neck into very well shaped shoulders with enough muscle but not overloaded, lovely straight well boned forelegs, excellent pasterns and nice tight cat feet. Returning to his head, he has excellent wet set and shaped ears, nice flat skull which is neither to broad nor too narrow, correct stop between head and muzzle being gently sloping to excellent length of muzzle to tip of broad black nose, very nice full dentition and excellent jaw line. All in all a very pleasing head that for me is what I want to see in a young Gt Dane. He has nice depth and just enough width of chest to give him a really nice deep well sprung rib and great loin, superb top line and nice croup going into a very well set tail, which was carried very correctly, excellent strong nicely muscled hind quarters that gave him the drive so few had. Moved and handled very well, very unlucky to meet an exquisite young bitch in the challenge for Best Puppy in show however that could easily change on another day as both were exquisite young examples of the breed.

2nd Mrs S E Southgate & Mrs P Price’s:- “Bombadier Boy Via Leamap” 10 month old Blue also very well constructed and well schooled. Very good well balanced young dog with well shaped head, well set ears and nice eyes. Good length of muzzle very good dentition and lovely reach of neck. Nice shoulders good straight well boned forelegs just a little soft on pasterns and feet could be tighter. Good depth and width of chest, nice top line with nice croup and tail set. Very good rear angulation which aided his strong hind movement. Still to mature which I feel sure he will do very soon. Lovely lively character.

3rd Mr Mrs I Bollons:- “Bandwar For Aces High”.

Junior Dog:- 5ents 1 abs

1st Mr Mrs & Miss JC Dyson’s :- “Samdice My Hero(AI)” Just out of Puppy this youngster is maturing very well, lovely clear fawn very nicely balanced with good strong correctly shaped head and body. Head shape is as required with very nicely placed ears, good clear eyes set very well and nice smooth stop, correct balance of muzzle to skull with just the right amount of width of skull, excellent nose pigmentation and nice broad nostrils, good dentition with nice clean line to jawbone. Good strong neck line into very nicely laid shoulders with just enough muscle so as not to appear overdone, good strong boned forelegs and nice pasterns and tight feet. Very good depth of chest, good top line and well shaped rib cage. Very good hind quarters with just enough angulation to aid drive but would like to see a bit more muscle to help push him along. Good croup and tail set, moved cleanly.

2nd Mesdames Wallis & Simmonds:- “Adoreadane Just that Jazz For Danojan” Well balanced young dog with very clean movement. Definitely a male with strong head and body excellent markings on this Mantle colouring with white markings clearly defined. Substantial head with very nice ears and clear eyes, well shaped skull and muzzle, very good dentition and lip line with very no loose skin. Good reach and length of neck to good shoulders and strong well boned forelegs, pasterns good, would like to see tighter feet. Good depth and width of chest and nicely spring rib, very nice level top line held well on the move, nice rear quarters with good angulation, strong hind leg movement, nice tail set held correctly on the move, pushed very hard for 1st place.

3rd.Mrs P Benson & Mr R Hooker’s :- “Sharandene Sir Tarquin”.

Yearling Dog:- 3 ents

1st Mrs P Benson & Mr R Hooker’s:- “Sharandene Sir Tarquin”. This 15 month old Harlequin dog changed dramatically from the previous class when he had played his handler around so much, he settled so well in this class that I was able to see his many attributes along with his movement which had been very erratic, he was smooth and easy and totally in control of himself. He has a very nice masculine head with good ear set and clear eyes, good shape of skull and good length of muzzle, very nice dentition. Good reach of neck to strong shoulders and well boned forelegs with nice feet and very good pasterns. Nice level back with good width and depth of rib and chest, good hind quarters but would like a bit more muscle, nice tail set, moved once settled very nicely.

2nd Miss J Cranfield’s :- “ Zefathers Heartbreaker W16” 19month fawn dog of good size, Well shaped head and body, good bone to forelegs but quite weak on pasterns. Fair rib and chest, with level top line, hind quarters require more muscle and a little straight in stifle for me, sadly carries his tail high which affects his movement.

3rd Mr Mrs J & L Donnelly’s “Primus Breakin News”.

Novice Dog 7 ents 3abs

1st as First in Junior Dog
2nd as Second in Puppy Dog.
3rd Mrs P Benson & Mr R Hooker’s:- “Tamzdane Lord of the Rings”.

Graduate Dog:- 2 ents

1st Mr Mrs I Bollons:- “Day Sue Born Ready” strong nicely built Harlequin, good correctly shaped head with excellent ear carriage, clear eyes good dentition, nice lips, lovely reach of a strong neck to very nice strong shoulders with just enough muscle, very good strong bone to forelegs and nice pasterns, feet could be a little tighter. Fair depth of chest and spring of rib, nice level top line and good croup allowing excellent tail carriage, good hind quarter angulation with just enough muscle, moved cleanly and straight.

2nd Mrs S Pepper’s “Danemoor Black Watch for Sarawen” 17 month old, nice head, neck and chest, fair bone to forelegs, level top line, would prefer more hind quarter angulation and muscle, needs some firm training to move correctly and stop crabbing.

Post Graduate Dog:- 2 ents

1st Mrs S Pepper’s “Sarawen Arch Deacon” 2 year old mature Blue with very nice shaped head, good correct ear carriage nice clear eyes good well shaped skull and correct length of muzzle also very correct in shape, good dentition, nice big nose with excellent nostrils, correct shape and length of neck to create elegant stance on strong well boned forelegs, nice well shaped should and good depth of brisket, good top line and croup, good strong hind quarters allowing nice free movement, good length of tail, moved well with his tail in a happy wagging movement all the time. Still maturing very nicely would like to see him in a year or so.

2nd Mrs L M Collett’s “ Foaldown Secret Mission” Fawn dog of good size and balance, nice head, good depth of chest and fair rib cage however carrying too much weight his top line suffered as did his pasterns. Fair muscle to hind quarters, good tail set moved ok.

Limit Dog :- 3 ents

1st Mr Mrs L Chappell & Mr Mrs A Dyson’s:- “Selmalda Journey to the Line” Two and half year old fawn dog of good size, nicely balanced with a good masculine head, correct ear carriage, very well set clear eyes, good shaped flat skull to excellent length of muzzle, nice dark nose and very nice dentition, good reach and arch of neck to well placed shoulders with fair muscle, good strong well boned forelegs, nice pasterns and good tight feet. Good width of chest and nice spring of rib, level top line with good tail set and nicely hanging tail of good length, Strong hind quarters with fair angulation. This dog moved well but at times rather erratically would like to see a little more strength in the hocks this I believe would strengthen his drive.

2nd I Stevens & L Squires :- “Carranisle Masked Monsieur at Tabordane” Nice masculine head, good reach of neck fair depth of chest, strong bone to forelegs but weak on pasterns and soft on top line, good tail set and good rear angulation but needs more muscle, moved ok.

3rd As 3rd in Novice Dog

Open Dog :- 3 ents

1st Best Dog & Best of Breed. Mr Mrs L Chappell & Miss JA Williams:- “Selmalda The Journey JW” This dog for me fulfils the breed standard in virtually every word especially in the “General appearance:- “Very Muscular, Strong though Elegantly Built, with the look of dash and daring “. Having said this he was also calm and gentle and so regal I found it hard not to keep looking at him whilst going over the other dogs in the class. He has a classically correct head and is equally so well balanced and has enough muscle and good bone to ensure you see strength in him in abundance and power. I had no difficulty in making this beautiful male my best of breed and I am so pleased my co judge of the bitches agreed without the need for any referee. I am sure this elegant young male will be a Champion.

2nd Reserve Best Dog. Mrs H Seddon’s :- “Tenaya Cherokee Lone Wolf” This is yet another top dog of excellent quality, Strong in Body and elegant at the same time, this same aged dog as 1st has all the same attributes and the same capability in movement, I did have a very hard time deciding on their places and believe that they could easily change at any other show. Both have power and balance, excellent bone and construction and both moved very well.
Excellent head and neck, super deep chest and rib cage, lovely top line held very well on the move, Strong movement on very strong well muscled legs, excellent pasterns and lovely tight feet. First rate hind quarters with excellent angulation, super croup and tail set, in my opinion these dogs were the tops today.

3rd Mrs J & Miss J Flanagan’s:- “Dainmajik The Enchanter for Soupury”.

Special Veteran Dog:- 2 ent 1 abs

1st Mr Mrs J Black’s:- “Bandwar Happy As Larry JW ShCM” 7 year old Harlequin of good size and strong body, Nice masculine head, good ear shape and fair eyes, good dentition, nice reach of neck to good shoulders and strong well boned forelegs. Good depth of chest nice level top line strong well angulated hind quarters and well set tail, moved well for his age.

Special Open Brindle:- 2 ents 1 abs

1st Mrs J & Miss J Flanagan’s;- “DainmajikThe Enchanter for Soupury” 6 year old male of good size and balance. Strong masculine head, nice reach of neck to fair shoulders, good bone to forelegs and good ribs. Strong top line to well set tail, fair rear angulation moved ok.

Special Open Fawn:- 4 ents

1st Lady J Ingram’s ;-“Dainmajik The Wizzard Ai” 2 year old fawn dog of good quality skull shape and very good length of muzzle to good blunt end of lovely dark nose, good dentition, very nice reach and shape of neck to correct shoulder set. Very nice strong well boned forelegs and good pasterns with nice tight feet. Correct depth of chest and nice spring of rib, good top line and very nice croup with correct tail set so tail remained low. Strong hind quarters with fair muscle but would like a little more bend of stifle, nice clean flowing movement.

2nd As 2nd in Post Graduate dog

3rd As 2bd in Limit dog

Special Open Black :- 2 ents 1 abs

1st As 2nd in Graduate Dog.

Special Open Dog Blue:- 3 ents no abs

1st Mrs P Price’s:- “Leamap Chivas Regal” 4 year old substantial dog with strong masculine head to well balanced body, good strong neck and shoulders, strong forelegs and fair pasterns, good depth of chest and strong level top line, nice hind quarters with just enough muscle, good strong tail set moved cleanly and with power.

2nd As 1st in Post Graduate.

Special Open Harlequin:- 2 ents

1st Mrs P Benson & Mr R Hooker’s :-“Tamzdane Lord of the Rings” This 3 year old improved each time he came in the ring, he has a very nice well balanced head and body with strong bone and good muscle throughout, he just started off all floppy with a devil may care attitude in Novice dog got better as he settled in Limit and finally he got his act together in this class. Now all he has to do is get his brain in gear in the first class he enters as he does deserve better placing. He is a lovely dog with a need to up his game and show himself off to his best ability, which he proved he can do.

2nd Mr J M Hugill :- “Shairace The Maestro” 2 year old still maturing, A little too heavy in head for me but good ear carriage and clear eyes, good dentition, a little short in neck also for me, good shoulders and nice strong bone to forelegs, deep chest, fair top line, good hind angulation. Very nice temperament moved okay.

Sarah Richardson

Bitches Judge

I would like to sincerely thank the officers and committee for their kind invitation to judge at their show, the exhibitors for entering their bitches for me to judge and my two stewards Mick Bradford and my father Colin Richardson for keeping my ring running so smoothly. I had a lovely day and all decisions were taken in a very sportsmanlike manner.
For the most part temperament was good although there were a few bitches who wouldn’t be handled. I had a few questionable mouths and some were dirty which always amazes me. Shoulders are upright in a fair few. Then there is this shorter muzzle to back skull. Awful!
I was pleased with my overall winners for type and if the younger exhibits fulfil their potential the breed will have some lovely bitches for the future.

Minor Puppy Bitch (5, 2 abs)
1st Day & Fry’s Vanmore Sparkling Eyes for Janriche. Fawn, black mask. At just 6 months this young bitch has it all in front of her. Lovely pigment, expressive, clean, feminine head, with correct proportions. Lovely length of neck into clean straight front, nice layback of shoulder, good length of rib and tuckup into well angulated rear with short hocks. In excellent condition and presented beautifully.
2nd Thurlby’s Justinian Lady Beatrice. 6 month lighter Fawn with black mask. Another young lady with a lot to offer and unfortunate to meet the winner. I preferred head shape and bone of 1st. 2nd Bishton’s Jaydania Steffi Graf. 9 month Fawn with black mask. A slightly heavier type of bitch all through. A lot to like about her but not moving so well in front today. I am sure once she settles, she too has a bright future.

Novice Bitch (5, 1 abs)
1st Dyson’s Samdice Best of You (ai)

3rd Cranfield’s Zefathers Lady Leigh W15.

Special Veteran Bitch (2, 1 abs)
1st Cranfield’s NL Ch Zefathers Total Minded Sh CM. 6 ½ year old Fawn with black mask. I judged this Bitch as a puppy and I still like her!
